Community Services Board

The Board is a collaborative think-tank comprised of Community Members, Administration, and Council Members that discuss community events, programs, and volunteer opportunities to enhance residents' quality of life in our community.

Members at Large: Up to 8 Members at Large (including local, rural, adult, youth and senior members)

Municipal Planning Commission

The purpose of the Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) is to assist the Council with orderly planning and development within the confines of the Town’s Municipal Development Plan and Land Use Bylaw.  This includes reviewing Application for Development which are discretionary to the requirements of the Land Use Bylaw and for permitted uses where a relaxation or a variance of a regulation is required.  Their role also includes reviewing various subdivision applications to make recommendations to the Subdivision Authority.

The Municipal Planning Commission is made up of two council representatives and three members-at-large.  The MPC carries on the duties of the Development Authority which is required through legislation.

The number of times this committee meets will generally be once per month; however, it is dependent upon the number of applications received which require their review.

Council Policy Committees

Our town has three dedicated Policy Committees: Community Services, Corporate Services and Infrastructure. These committees work to review and provide recommendations on various policies before they are presented to the council for approval. These committees ensure policies align with community needs and priorities, fostering efficient and informed decision-making.  Each Committee has 3 members of Council with the Mayor sitting ex officio without voting rights unless it’s to meet quorum.

Community Services: Councillor Butcher, Councillor Brown, Councillor Smith

Corporate Services: Councillor Spicer, Councillor Olsen, Councillor Cosby

Ad Hoc - Dr. Recruitment and Retention

On November 4, 2025, Council formed an Ad Hoc Committee for the purpose of exploring, recommending and supporting strategies that promote the recruitment and retention of physicians and other healthcare professionals to serve the Town of Redwater and and the surrounding area.   They will present their findings to Council no later than June 30,2026.

Appointments:

Mayor McRae, Councillor Brown and Councillor Smith

Vacancies:

         One (1) Youth Member (1 year term)

         Two (2) Adult or Senior Members (maximum 3 year term)

Honorarium:

Board members receive an honorarium of $50 per meeting up to 12 meetings a year.

Commitment:

Meetings are held monthly with a break during July and August (10 per year minimum).  The meeting is set annually each year although special meetings may be called if required.

Eligibility:

  • All Members – reside in the Town of Redwater or Sturgeon County and cannot be permanent employees with the Town.
  • Youth Members – 14 – 18 years of age and attending Junior or Senior High School
  • Adult – 18 – 59 years of age
  • Senior – 60 years of age or older.

  • Must have an interest in the Town of Redwater (e.g. resident or business owner)

Honorarium:

  • Board members receive an honorarium of $50 per meeting up to 12 meetings a year.

Commitment:

  • The Town endeavors to combine required approvals into one monthly meeting but meetings are held as required to meet development permit approvals as needed.
